HTML 5 vs. FLASH

HTML 5 is currently under development as the next major revision of the HTML standard. Like its immediate predecessors, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a standard for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. The new standard incorporates features like video playback and drag-and-drop that have been previously dependent on third-party browser plug-inssuch as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight.

FLASH ( formerly Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to Web pages.
Flash content may be displayed on various computer systems and devices, using Adobe Flash Player, which is available free of charge for common Web browsers, some mobile phones and a few other electronic devices (using Flash Lite).

*From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

  1. video conferencing (voice and video)
  2. live audio/video recording
  3. video rotation and usage as a surface on a 3D object
  4. overlaying dynamic objects over the video like subtitles, closed captions, or video game characters
  5. using multiple videos overlayed on background images and stitched seamlessly together to make animated virtual persons

Problems with flash :

  1. Information embedded in Flash is often invisible to search engines.
  2. Web Analytics on Flash navigation is problematic and cumbersome.
  3. Flash breakInformation s Search Engine Site Previews
  4. Lack of consistent cross platform support.
  5. Code embedding Flash objects doesn’t pass w3c validation
  6. Some users disable Flash to avoid flash based advertising.
  7. Website updates continually require Flash skills
  8. Flash breaks web usability standards

My Thoughts:

I believe we need a universal method of controlling audio and video in the browser without the addition of adding third party applications. HTML5 is a great start to standardizing the web.
I think we still have a long way to go and I cant wait to see what the future holds in web design.

I am learning to design web pages and I am excited to be utilizing  the new Dreamweaver cs5 program.

Here are a few of the sites I have designed using dreamweaver.
